Overlanding, as I see it, is the art of embarking on self-reliant adventure journeys to distant and often secluded destinations where the journey itself takes precedence. This form of exploration isn't confined to any specific mode of transport—be it bicycles or trucks—as long as it's capable of navigating off conventional highways. In the realm of overlanding, camping is the primary mode of accommodation, and these journeys can extend for considerable periods, ranging from months to even years, often crossing international borders. While an expedition is typically understood as a journey with a defined purpose, overlanding, in its essence, sees the journey as the very purpose.
For me, overlanding isn't about conquering obstacles; it's about the joy of exploration. The paths we traverse might be rugged and technically challenging, but they are simply a means to an end, not the ultimate goal. The true objective is to witness GOD's creation and understand our world, whether it's a weekend excursion just a hundred miles from home or an ambitious 10,000-mile expedition across a different continent. The vehicles and equipment we use can be as straightforward or as elaborate as needed—they are, after all, just tools to facilitate the journey. In the world of overlanding, the real treasures lie in history, wildlife, culture, breathtaking scenery, and the ability to be self-sufficient. These, for me, are the invaluable rewards of overlanding.
